Startup with a Lincoln connection is automating cattle feedingIn a groundbreaking research paper published in the International Journal of Computer Engineering and Technology, researcher Nihitha Sallapalli from the United States explores how microservices architecture and FastAPI are revolutionizing the oil and gas industry's complex workflows. The research reveals significant improvements in system performance, scalability, and operational efficiency. The Data Tsunami Challenge Oil and gas platforms generate 2 terabytes of data daily across 30,000 data points, overwhelming traditional systems. With global production at 95 million barrels daily, the industry needs more adaptable solutions to manage and process this massive data volume effectively. Breaking Down the Monolith Microservices architecture revolutionizes operations by breaking down complex applications into independent, API-connected services. This approach enhances crucial functions like land ownership tracking, well monitoring, and production forecasting. Each service can be scaled and updated independently, efficiently managing data across millions of acres and thousands of stakeholders without system-wide disruptions. Speed and Efficiency Unleashed The implementation of microservices has delivered remarkable improvements in operational efficiency. Processing times for ownership transfers have decreased by 70%, while system response times have improved by 83%. The ability to handle concurrent requests has increased by 350%, enabling better real-time data access and enhanced user experience. Financial reconciliation processes that previously took six days are now completed in just 18 hours, representing an 87.5% improvement in processing speed. FastAPI: The Performance Catalyst FastAPI has revolutionized oil and gas operations with its exceptional processing power, handling 30,000 requests per second on a single server. The framework's advanced asynchronous capabilities significantly improve efficiency, reducing development time by 38% and testing time by 55%. This high-performance solution proves essential for managing the industry's massive data volumes, enabling smoother operations and faster data processing across multiple platforms. Development Excellence The adoption of microservices has transformed the development lifecycle. Development cycles have shortened by 62%, code reuse has increased by 48%, and bug resolution time has decreased by 72%. Teams can now work on individual services independently, making updates without disrupting the entire system. Critical updates that previously required full-day system downtimes can now be deployed in just two hours, reducing the risk of system-wide failures by 92%. Resource Optimization The shift to microservices architecture has led to substantial resource optimization. Organizations have reported a 40% decrease in energy consumption for data processing through more efficient resource allocation. Real-time updates and monitoring capabilities have reduced operational waste by 30%, translating to significant cost savings. Predictive maintenance algorithms, running as independent microservices, have improved equipment uptime by 25%, further enhancing operational efficiency. Data Management Innovation The microservices approach has revolutionized how companies handle their data processing needs. Well performance monitoring systems can now process data from tens of thousands of wells simultaneously, with each well potentially generating hundreds of data points per second. The architecture allows for real-time visibility into operations, increasing operational insights by 70% and enabling faster, more informed decision-making processes. Future-Ready Architecture As the industry continues to digitize with investments in digital technologies expected to reach $75 billion annually, microservices architecture stands as a cornerstone of modern oil and gas operations. The combination of microservices and FastAPI provides the scalability and flexibility needed to handle growing data volumes and complex workflows efficiently. This technological foundation enables companies to adapt quickly to changing market conditions and regulatory requirements while maintaining optimal performance. The research by Nihitha Sallapalli demonstrates that microservices architecture and FastAPI are not just technological improvements but essential tools for maintaining competitiveness in the evolving energy sector. These innovations provide the foundation for more agile, efficient, and scalable operations in an industry that continues to embrace digital transformation, ultimately driving improved competitiveness and operational efficiency in the dynamic energy sector.TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's government on Tuesday said it had lifted a ban on access to WhatsApp and Google Play after more than two years, the official IRNA news agency reported. The report said the country’s Supreme Council of Cyber Space made the decision in a meeting led by reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian, who has vowed to remove restrictions on social media. Iran’s telecommunication minister Sattar Heshemi in a post on X called the decision a “first step” in removing restrictions and said “the path will continue" — indicating the possibility of unblocking other services. Many people reached by The Associated Press across the capital, Tehran, and other cities said they had access to the services on computers but not yet on mobile phones. WhatsApp has been the third most popular messaging platform in Iran after Instagram and Telegram. The ban on WhatsApp and Google Play was put in place in 2022 during mass protests against the government over the death of a woman held by the country’s morality police for allegedly violating the strictly enforced dress code. The protests calmed in 2023 after a crackdown by police and security forces that led to the death of hundreds of people and the imprisonment of thousands. Iran has blocked access to various social media platforms over the years but many people in the country use proxies and VPNs to access them. The Associated Press

HC Wainwright & Co. analyst Raghuram Selvaraju upgraded Aclaris Therapeutics Inc ACRS from Neutral to Buy and a price target of $20 . The stock gained after the rerating. In a press release last month, Aclaris announced that it had entered into an exclusive license agreement with privately held Biosion, Inc. for worldwide rights (excluding Greater China) to BSI-045B, a potential best-in-class, clinical-stage, novel anti-TSLP monoclonal antibody, and BSI-502, a potential best-in-class, preclinical-stage, novel bispecific antibody directed against both TSLP and IL4R. Despite recent advances in anti-TSLP and anti-IL4R therapies, there remains a substantial unmet need for more effective and convenient treatment options. Also Read: Taiwan Semiconductor Expands in Japan: Sony and Denso Among First Customers In a completed Phase 2a, single-arm, proof-of-concept trial conducted in the U.S. in 22 patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis, BSI-045B was observed to have a pharmacodynamic, safety, and efficacy profile that could position it as a potential best-in-class therapy. BSI-045B is also being advanced in multiple Phase 2 studies in China by Biosion’s regional partner, targeting severe asthma and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, accelerating the potential to show proof-of-concept across additional indications. Selvaraju expects Aclaris to initiate multiple mid-stage clinical studies next year in the U.S. due to potential positive results from the Chinese trials. This should pave the way for registration programs in the coming years. From Selvaraju’s vantage point, BSI-045B could generate billions of dollars in sales across solely the U.S. and European Union markets in only chronic asthma and atopic dermatitis indications. This candidate could reach the U.S. market in 2029 to treat chronic asthma and in 2030 for treating AD, with potential peak annual sales of roughly $9.8 billion. Selvaraju’s forecasts include pricing in the $30K range in the U.S. and the $10K range in Europe, roughly in line with net pricing for Dupixent (dupilumab), the most commercially successful of the currently-marketed anti-IL-4R monoclonal antibodies with estimated 2024 sales totaling roughly 13 billion euros. Selvaraju noted that an earlier-generation monoclonal antibody, the anti-IgE agent Xolair (omalizumab), generated sales approaching $4 billion in 2023. Selvaraju ascribed a 30% probability of approval to BSI-045B in chronic asthma and a 20% probability of approval to this candidate in AD. Selvaraju projected fourth-quarter revenue of $2.9 million and EPS of $(0.10). Price Action: ACRS stock is up 8% at $2.94 at last check Monday. Brian Travis wasn’t the type of dad you would often hear at his children’s events, but he was the guy you’d always see. Whether he was tracking stats in the back row of the bleachers at a baseball game or dancing on stage in a rockstar outfit for a father-daughter dance, Travis was always there for his family. “He lived for family and his kids,” said Mindy Travis, Brian’s wife. Even in his final days, Brian Travis gave his all. After he died Dec. 5 — 12 days after the 48-year-old Lincoln man went into cardiac arrest — his family donated his organs. The community rallied around the Travis family for the donation as hundreds of people, including teammates, coaches and friends, filled the hospital hallway during an honor walk that same day at Bryan East Campus. “I didn’t know how much impact that he had or we had on people,” Mindy said. Kara Cordell, spokeswoman for Live On Nebraska, said that honor walks occur every time a family undergoes an organ donation. The final tribute includes the donor's caregivers and loved ones lining the hallways of the hospital as the donor is transported to the operating room. "Legacy is important to donor families," Cordell said. "Whether in front of a small group of staff members or with dozens of people present, the significance of the donor's life and their impact on others is recognized and celebrated." Cordell said the walk brings pride and comfort to those saying goodbye to their loved ones, whether it's friends, coworkers or others close to the family. Organ donations aren't common, Cordell said, because donor candidates must be in a hospital and on ventilation prior to the organ donation surgery. In Nebraska, there have been 111 successful organ donation cases this year. Of those, only five have been at Bryan East. Outside of the hospital, hockey sticks were set out by those who knew Travis through the Lincoln Junior Stars, where his son Matthew plays hockey. The online tribute “Sticks out for Brian” was circulated on social media. “You don’t know how many people care or have your back,” Mindy said. “It’s been overwhelming, but I’m grateful because I don’t know how to do this without them.” Mindy and Brian’s relationship was built on support, love and their contrasting personalities, she said. Despite Mindy’s independent nature after losing both her parents at a young age, Brian was steadfast in her life. “I’m pretty strong-willed and hard-headed, and I would push to see if he would break,” Mindy said. “He never would and I could never understand why he stayed with me.” Brian was the parent who read to their three kids each night and could be counted on for helping with any crafts. “He would always make the kids and I homemade Valentine cards,” Mindy said. “He did that when we dated as well. My birthday card was always homemade.” Mindy first met Brian in Columbia, Missouri, while attending college. After he proposed on a bike trail, the two got married and moved to Nebraska in 2003. After 11 years of living in Kearney, the family moved to Lincoln, where they would raise their sports-loving family of five. Brian and Mindy were determined to make it to every event, whether it was track meets, hockey games or dance recitals. He even participated in both their daughters' dance recitals several times. “He would go and learn the steps, and then secretly, he would practice them downstairs,” Mindy said. “He did it because his kids wanted him to do it, and he took pride in their sports.” His love for children wasn’t limited to his own. Mindy said Brian treated other kids as if they were his, offering unwavering support to the families around him. Dave Quevedo and his wife, Joey, met the Travis family nearly 10 years ago as their children grew up playing flag football, baseball and hockey together. Mindy and Joey would run the events together and Brian could often be found chalking lines and helping with warmups. “We were always together at different events because of our boys,” Dave Quevedo said. “Brian was always around.” Brian was the kind of parent to keep track of each player’s stats and which opponents their team would be going up against. He’d sit toward the back with his paper book during the baseball games until the stats were digitized and kept electronically. “He probably actually got to enjoy the games at that point,” Quevedo said. In addition to working in insurance at Continental Western Group, Brian became a pedicab driver in 2018 to supplement the family’s income. He would often donate plasma to ensure they could make ends meet and to provide the best opportunities for his family. For years, Quevedo would watch his best friend work hard to make sure he could always provide the best for his family. “He was that amazing human,” Dave said. “It sucks. Why are the good ones the ones that are dying so young?” On the evening of Nov. 23, Brian was working as a pedicab driver around downtown Lincoln after the Nebraska-Wisconsin volleyball game. It was at about 9:30 p.m. when he collapsed at the Embassy Suites hotel. Bystanders performed CPR and his heart was shocked twice, but he never woke up. Mindy still doesn’t understand what happened to Brian, who seemed healthy and had a very active lifestyle. In the weeks after his death, it’s been difficult for her to come home expecting to see her upbeat husband and not seeing him there. The Quevedos are just a few of their close friends making sure Mindy and her children never feel alone. In November, Joey Quevedo started a GoFundMe to help cover medical expenses. “It’s so hard for me to accept help,” Mindy said. “I’m good at giving it, so to receive it is so hard for me because it makes me feel guilty.” Get local news delivered to your inbox!
Documentary about dyes includes WNC professor, sonLOS ANGELES (AP) — Adrian Kempe and Quinton Byfield scored in the second period, and the Los Angeles Kings beat the Seattle Kraken 2-1 on Saturday. David Rittich made 19 saves for the Kings, who improved to 6-2-1 at home. Kempe and Byfield scored 1:44 apart in the second period. Byfield buried a sharp-angle slap shot on a power play while dropping to a knee. It was his 98th career point in 200 games. Brandon Montour got the Kraken on the board with 1:26 left in the game. He converted a long shot with Joey Daccord off for another skater, but Los Angeles held on. Daccord finished with 19 stops for Seattle. Takeaways Kraken: Jordan Eberle will miss at least three months after undergoing surgery on his pelvis. He had six goals and five assists in 17 games before he got hurt against Chicago on Nov. 14. Kings: The power play had been in a 1-for-16 rut (6.25%) over the previous six games before Byfield found the net. It was the Kings’ lone opportunity with the man-advantage. Key moment After following its 1-0 loss to Buffalo on Wednesday with a fourth straight period of extreme low-event hockey, Los Angeles created a lot more activity and offense to start the second and generate its two goals. Biden signs defense bill, despite ban on transgender health care for military kids
bkparashar@htlive.com After a setback in the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP is now basking in euphoria following its resounding victory in the Uttar Pradesh assembly bypolls, effectively halting the momentum the Samajwadi Party-led Opposition gained just over five months ago on the road to the 2027 assembly elections. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won seven of the nine assembly seats for which the bypolls were held on November 20. The NDA not only improved its tally over 2022, but also snatched seats like Kundarki and Katehari from the SP, besides increasing the winning margins on some and narrowing down the defeat gap on some others. The NDA won only four of these seats in 2022. The Ghaziabad, Khair and Phulpur seats went to the BJP and Majhawan to its alliance partner, the NISHAD party, then. In the 2024 bypolls, the BJP has retained all these four seats and brought three additional seats into its kitty. The BJP won the Ghaziabad, Khair, Kundarki, Phulpur, Majhawan, and Katehari seats while its ally the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) retained the Meerapur seat. The RLD was the SP’s ally in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly polls. The SP that emerged as the dominant force in the Lok Sabha elections in UP had to remain satisfied with just two seats, Sisamau and Karhal, which is its pocketborough. The BJP’s landslide win in the assembly bypolls comes as a powerful morale booster after party’s tally fell from 62 out of 80 Lok Sabha seatsin 2019 to just 33 in June 2024 whereas the SP emerged as the single largest party from the state with 37 Lok Sabha seats. The bypoll results, it is believed, will inject the much-needed confidence into the party as it gears up for the crucial 2027 battle. In fact, the bypolls were a critical test for the BJP, given the high stakes involved and the political capital invested. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath himself spearheaded the campaign. Both deputy chief ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, state BJP chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary and general secretary (organisation) Dharampal were also assigned the seats with a view to ensuring the party’s victory. All this reflected the BJP’s desperation as well as determination to reverse setbacks it suffered in the Lok Sabha polls. Hence, the party pulled out all stops to win the battle of perception. Otherwise, the bypolls had no other significance. The results have not only saved the party from potential embarrassment, but also reaffirmed its grassroots strength and ability to mobilise its cadre effectively. Analysts view these victories as a testament to the BJP’s organisational machinery and its continued appeal. The results, according to them, have come a big relief to Yogi Adityanath personally and the BJP in general. “The outcome of the bypolls will consolidate the Yogi Adityanath’s leadership in the BJP and the government and put brakes to many rumours that gained currency after the Lok Sabha polls, within and outside the party,” political scientist Shashi Kant Pandey said. Welcoming the results, UP BJP chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary said, “It is the victory of the work of the double-engine government in the state and defeat of the SP’s negative politics and lies that now stand exposed.” Pandey, however, said despite its resounding victory in the by-polls, the BJP would continue to face challenges ahead. “The party’s leadership will need to address the factors that led to its Lok Sabha debacle and sustain the momentum gained through these bypolls,” he said. An indication about this already has already come from SP chief Akhilesh Yadav who, after the results, wrote on X, “The tricks of those who have made ‘election’ synonymous with ‘corruption’ have been captured in photographs and exposed before the world. The world, the country and Uttar Pradesh saw the most distorted form of electoral politics in this by-election. There may be a time of falsehood but not an era. Now the real struggle has begun... clench your fist, tighten your fist and make the PDA’s proclamation ‘Judenge to Jeetenge!” The bypoll results may have provided a much-needed lifeline to the BJP, but the road to reclaiming the dominance it lost in Uttar Pradesh in the Lok Sabha elections may still remain long and challenging. This victory is a stamp on the BJP's governance model, PM Modi said. Top Quotes from PM's Speech "Development, good governance, and social justice have won in Maharashtra. Lies and deceit have suffered a crushing defeat. Divisive forces and dynastic politics have lost in Maharashtra today," Prime Minister Modi said. "Today, several bypoll results have been declared too and we have also increased our Lok Sabha tally after winning one more seat. We have done well in every state and it shows that people want development I want to thank the people, especially the mothers and the farmers for the win. I want to thank the people of Jharkhand too and we will work for its development, PM Modi said. "In the last 50 years, no party or pre-poll alliance has secured such a big win as Maharashtra's. This is the third consecutive time, that a BJP-led alliance has won in a state. This is indeed a historic win," he said. "This is the third consecutive time that the BJP has emerged as the largest party in Maharashtra, which is undoubtedly a historic feat. This victory is a stamp on the BJP's governance model," the Prime Minister said in his speech. "The voter sees that those who promise big things in one state, how are they faring in the other states. Maharashtra voters saw how in Karnataka, and Himachal, Congress cheated people. You will get to see this in Punjab as well, Prime Minister said. "Now only one constitution will be applicable in the entire country... that constitution is the constitution of Baba Saheb Ambedkar, the constitution of India," the Prime Minister said. "After Haryana, the biggest message of this election is unity. 'Ek hain toh safe hain' has become the 'maha-mantra' of the country," the Prime Minister said after the BJP secured a second win in Assembly elections after the Lok Sabha polls. "This Maharashtra election has exposed the true faces of the INDIA bloc and Aghadi groups before the entire nation. We all know that Balasaheb Thackeray made significant contributions to this country. However, the Congress, driven by a lust for power, managed to take a faction of his party along, but no Congress leader can ever praise Balasaheb's principles," he said. "I challenged the Aghadi leaders to get Congress to praise Balasaheb's principles and policies, but they've failed to do so to date," he added. "I also tell the Congress people and their allies to listen carefully... now no power in the world can bring back Article 370," Prime Minister said.

DUBLIN, Ireland – Irish mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor assaulted a woman at a party in Dublin in 2018 and must pay her nearly 250,000 euros ($259,950) in damages, a jury decided on Friday, November 22. The jury of eight women and four men reached its verdict in the civil trial at Ireland’s high court after six hours and 10 minutes of deliberation. The plaintiff, Nikita Hand, alleged that McGregor sexually assaulted her on December 9, 2018, and that another man, James Lawrence, did the same, the court heard during two weeks of evidence. The jury found that Lawrence did not assault Hand. McGregor left the court through a large scrum of reporters without commenting and later posted on X that he planned to appeal the decision. “The judge’s instruction and the modest award was given for assault, not for aggravated or exemplary damages. I am disappointed that the jury did not hear all the evidence that the DDP reviewed,” he posted. McGregor, 36, denied the allegation and said he had “fully consensual sex” with Hand. He also denied causing bruising to the plaintiff. Hand’s lawyer told the jury that when she was referred to a sexual assault treatment unit the day after the alleged assault, a doctor was so concerned that he directed that photographs be taken of her injuries. A paramedic treating the woman’s injuries the following morning testified that he had never seen such intense bruising on a victim, per BBC News. Hand said she then let McGregor do what he wanted to because she feared for her life and that she would not see her daughter again. “He let me go and I remember saying I was sorry, as I felt that I did something wrong and I wanted to reassure him that I wouldn’t tell anyone so he wouldn’t hurt me again,” the woman said in court. She alleged that McGregor put her in a choke hold multiple times and later said, “Now you know how I felt in the Octagon where I tapped out three times,” in reference to a UFC bout in which he had to admit defeat. McGregor has denied the accusations, saying that the two had consensual sex. The UFC superstar said in court of the chokehold allegation, “It is a full-blown lie among many lies. How anyone could believe that me, as a prideful person, would highlight my shortcomings.” Hand said that she and a friend made contact with McGregor, who she knew, after a work Christmas party. She said they were driven by McGregor to a party in a penthouse room of a south Dublin hotel where drugs and alcohol were consumed. She said McGregor took her to a bedroom in the penthouse and sexually assaulted her. Speaking outside the court, Hand said she was overwhelmed by the support she had received and that she felt vindicated. “To all the victims of sexual assault, I hope my story is a reminder that no matter how afraid you might be, speak up, you have a voice and keep on fighting for justice,” she said. McGregor later posted on his social media account: “I am with my family now, focused on my future. Thank you to all my support worldwide.” McGregor and his longtime fiancee, Dee Devlin, have four children. McGregor has not fought in UFC since sustaining a broken leg during a July 2021 loss to Dustin Poirier. But civil claims can also be serious business. And Trump has been busily suing the press, flagging another possible casualty of his next administration: the First Amendment. Last week, Trump sued the Des Moines Register newspaper and its parent company and former pollster Ann Selzer for “brazen election interference” over a poll published a few days before the election, which indicated that Vice President Kamala Harris would win Iowa by 3 points (Trump in fact won by 13 points). The lawsuit alleges that Selzer intentionally swung the poll results in favor of Harris and seeks money damages and an order compelling the news outlet to “disclose all information upon which they relied” for the poll. A spokesperson stated that the paper already released the “poll’s full demographics, cross tabs, weighted and unweighted data, as well as a technical explanation from pollster Ann Selzer.” Trump’s lawyers argue that the poll forced Republicans to “divert campaign time and money to areas in which they are ahead” and deceived “the public into believing that Democrat candidates are performing better than they really are.” They cite Chapter 714H of the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act, which addresses “an unfair practice, deception, fraud, false pretense or false promise ... with intent that others rely upon [it].” That law was passed in 2009 to let private parties sue over alleged consumer fraud and has been used to challenge things like the sale of herbal pills for alleged brain-boosting properties and stem-cell therapy to fight aging. Trump has brought a similar deceptive trade claim against CBS News for $10 billion (yes, really) over an interview “60 Minutes” did with Harris. Seth Stern, advocacy director for the Freedom of the Press Foundation, warned that the Iowa lawsuit could create an environment where “journalists can’t help but look over their shoulders knowing the incoming administration is on the lookout for any pretext or excuse to come after them.” This comes on the heels of the president-elect reaching a settlement for $15 million in a defamation lawsuit against ABC News. The network (for which I am a legal contributor) also agreed to apologize over the alleged libel — assertions by anchor George Stephanopoulos that Trump had been found “liable for rape” in E. Jean Carroll’s $5 million civil trial concluded last may. The jury found that Trump had sexually abused Carroll in a department store dressing room in 1996 In dismissing Trump’s countersuit for defamation against Carroll for indicating that he had raped her, the judge concluded that “the jury’s verdict ... establishes, as against Mr. Trump, the fact that Mr. Trump ‘raped her,’ albeit digitally rather than with his penis.” But a different judge refused to dismiss Trump’s similar defamation claim against ABC News. The bottom line: Lawsuits can be unpredictable, time-consuming and expensive for defendants, even if there is no merit to them. Trump understands this. The result is a chilling effect on the media and polling industries, which might think twice before they publish anything displeasing to Trump — even if it is true. After unsuccessfully suing reporter Tim O’Brien over his reporting on his wealth, Trump said, “I spent a couple of bucks on legal fees, and they spent a whole lot more. I did it to make his life miserable, which I’m happy about.” In 2023, he sued publisher Simon and Schuster for copyright violations in federal court in Florida, claiming that the company had engaged in “systematic usurpation, manipulation, and exploitation” of audio recordings of author Bob Woodward’s interviews of Trump. In a recent court filing, Trump encouraged the publisher to “follow Mr. Stephanopoulos’ expression of contrition.” Law professor Samantha Barbas remarked that “it’s clear that Trump is waging war on the press. Trump and his lawyers are going to use any legal claim that they can think has a chance of sticking.” Robert Corn-Revere, chief counsel of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, likewise called the Iowa lawsuit “absurd” and “a direct assault on the First Amendment. Newspapers and polling firms are not engaged in ‘deceptive practices’ just because they publish stories and poll results President-elect Donald Trump doesn’t like. Getting a poll wrong is not election interference or fraud.” The First Amendment expressly guarantees “freedom ... of the press.” Moreover, the Supreme Court in the landmark 1964 New York Times v. Sullivan case adopted an “actual malice” standard for defamation suits brought by government officials or public figures against the media. In other words, such people must prove that a statement was made “with knowledge that it was false or with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not.” Joel Simon, director of the CUNY Journalism Protection Initiative, accordingly stated of the Iowa lawsuit, “The possibility of legal victory is slim because under the ‘actual malice’ standard, reporting done in good faith is protected in the U.S. But for a smaller or less resourced news organization, mounting a legal defense can be a serious challenge.” To enable courts to get rid of bogus defamation suits more easily, a number of states have passed anti-SLAPP (or “strategic lawsuits against public participation”) laws. Earlier this month, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) and Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.) introduced the bipartisan Free Speech Protection Act, “a new federal anti-SLAPP law that is intended to protect journalists and the public by providing a means to dismiss frivolous lawsuits, including suits alleging defamation, in federal court.” Courtesy: thehill

The Salvation Army in Prince Albert is searching for some volunteers this holiday season to help ring those bells for the organization’s annual Christmas Kettle Campaign. The fundraiser kicked off this past week across the country and is one of Canada’s largest and most recognizable annual charitable events. Major Ed Dean with the Salvation Army said the work is easy and is a great way to give back. “Bell ringing is quite easy, it’s standing for two hours at one of our Christmas Kettles. We have 800 kettle shifts to fill this year and the more shifts we fill, the better we will do with our campaign. Every hour that somebody is on a kettle, it makes a huge difference in what we can do in our community throughout the year.” The money raised helps the organization pay for toys for children and funds their community feeding program, where they serve over 50,000 meals per year to vulnerable men, women and children, or to anyone who is hungry in Prince Albert. “As you know, food is not getting cheaper,” said Dean. “These dollars are needed to help cover that cost. The need is still there, we’re serving 150-200 people five times a week at the Salvation Army.” Across Canada in 2023, the organization served 3.2 million meals that fed families with children, employed people whose low wages don’t cover basic living essentials, individuals on social assistance, and Canadians living on a fixed income, which includes seniors and people with disabilities. Dean said the initiatives rely on volunteers to keep running. “It’s all done with volunteers, they’re doing all the cooking and the cleaning. And so now, if we could have some other volunteers step up and say ‘You know what, I could give two hours to my community’ because it’s neighbours helping neighbours.” Christmas Kettles will be set up at businesses around the city, including at Safeway, Walmart, Real Canadian Superstore, Wholesale Club, Save-On-Foods, Co-op Food Store, and the Co-op Liquor Store on 2nd Ave. Additionally, the Salvation Army will have one at A&W, but the kettle itself will be different from the rest as it’s, what Dean calls, a “tip tap kettle”. “It’s a kettle with a tap machine, like an electronic kettle, and it’s set up in $10 increments, so they can tap their card at that location and they’re giving to the Salvation Army,” he explained, noting the changing times. “That’s the challenging piece when you don’t carry cash anymore, electronic is the way to go.” Like in previous years, kettles collecting change will have QR codes attached to them to allow shoppers to scan them to donate online. Those who wish to volunteer at one of the many Christmas Kettles around Prince Albert can call the Salvation Army office at (306) 763-6078. From there, they can dial the bell ringer extension attached to the phone number. “We would love to have groups or children singing. There’s lots of different ways they could have some fun, maybe they’ll meet some people they haven’t seen over the year,” said Dean. Christmas kettles are taking donations from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. five days a week from Tuesday to Saturday. The final day of the Campaign will be on Christmas Eve. “Every hour that someone is on a kettle, it could mean a difference in $100.” — loganc.lehmann@pattisonmedia.comEx-president Alberto Fernández has been formally summoned to testify next month in the court case investigating him for gender violence against his ex-partner Fabiola Yañez. The order, by Judge Julián Ercolini, was made in a resolution later published by local press. Ercolini said he considered the evidence supplied by the prosecutor "sufficient" to "summon Alberto Ángel Fernández to testify at 11am on December 11 of the current year" at the federal courthouse in Retiro, Buenos Aires. "He is imputed for having caused on at least two occasions injuries to his then partner Fabiola Andrea Yáñez, whom he had attacked physically, in her arm and right eye," reads the judicial resolution, detailing that both alleged attacks occurred in 2021 during Fernández’s 2019-2023 presidency, according to the denunciation. The writ adds that from then on "the psychological and physical violence became recurrent" on the part of Fernández and Yáñez "had been coerced " into not denouncing it. “Fernández, directly and through third parties, insistently and aggressively asked her not to file a complaint” of gender violence, wrote the judge. Last August 6, former first lady Yáñez denounced Fernández for physical and psychological violence. The couple have a son Francisco, 30 months old. A few days later, the veteran Peronist leader was indicted in the case at the request of the prosecutor, who described the different types of violence which Yáñez said she had suffered, subsequently summoning various witnesses to hear their testimony. Fernández, 65, has denied all accusations. "The truth lies elsewhere," he maintained via his social networks. Judge Ercolini said in his ruling that Fernández’s abuse of Yáñez had left her “with psychological damage, producing a permanent weakening of her health.” – TIMES/AFP/NA Ads Space Ads Space
