Up next for Morehead State is a Thursday matchup with UT Martin at home, and Kentucky Christian visits Wofford on Saturday. The Associated Press created this story using technology provided by Data Skrive and data from Sportradar .The Christmas tradition has become nearly global in scope: Children from around the world track Santa Claus as he sweeps across the earth, delivering presents and defying time. Each year, at least 100,000 kids call into the North American Aerospace Defense Command to inquire about Santa's location. Millions more follow online in nine languages, from English to Japanese. On any other night, NORAD is scanning the heavens for potential threats, such as last year's Chinese spy balloon. But on Christmas Eve, volunteers in Colorado Springs are fielding questions like, "When is Santa coming to my house?" and, "Am I on the naughty or nice list?" "There are screams and giggles and laughter," said Bob Sommers, 63, a civilian contractor and NORAD volunteer. Sommers often says on the call that everyone must be asleep before Santa arrives, prompting parents to say, "Do you hear what he said? We got to go to bed early." NORAD's annual tracking of Santa has endured since the Cold War, predating ugly sweater parties and Mariah Carey classics. The tradition continues regardless of government shutdowns, such as the one in 2018, and this year. Here's how it began and why the phones keep ringing. The origin story is Hollywood-esque It started with a child's accidental phone call in 1955. The Colorado Springs newspaper printed a Sears advertisement that encouraged children to call Santa, listing a phone number. A boy called. But he reached the Continental Air Defense Command, now NORAD, a joint U.S. and Canadian effort to spot potential enemy attacks. Tensions were growing with the Soviet Union, along with anxieties about nuclear war. Air Force Col. Harry W. Shoup picked up an emergency-only "red phone" and was greeted by a tiny voice that began to recite a Christmas wish list. "He went on a little bit, and he takes a breath, then says, 'Hey, you're not Santa,'" Shoup told The Associated Press in 1999. Realizing an explanation would be lost on the youngster, Shoup summoned a deep, jolly voice and replied, "Ho, ho, ho! Yes, I am Santa Claus. Have you been a good boy?" Shoup said he learned from the boy's mother that Sears mistakenly printed the top-secret number. He hung up, but the phone soon rang again with a young girl reciting her Christmas list. Fifty calls a day followed, he said. In the pre-digital age, the agency used a 60-by-80 foot (18-by-24 meter) plexiglass map of North America to track unidentified objects. A staff member jokingly drew Santa and his sleigh over the North Pole. The tradition was born. "Note to the kiddies," began an AP story from Colorado Springs on Dec. 23, 1955. "Santa Claus Friday was assured safe passage into the United States by the Continental Air Defense Command." In a likely reference to the Soviets, the article noted that Santa was guarded against possible attack from "those who do not believe in Christmas." Is the origin story humbug? Some grinchy journalists have nitpicked Shoup's story, questioning whether a misprint or a misdial prompted the boy's call. In 2014, tech news site Gizmodo cited an International News Service story from Dec. 1, 1955, about a child's call to Shoup. Published in the Pasadena Independent, the article said the child reversed two digits in the Sears number. "When a childish voice asked COC commander Col. Harry Shoup, if there was a Santa Claus at the North Pole, he answered much more roughly than he should — considering the season: 'There may be a guy called Santa Claus at the North Pole, but he's not the one I worry about coming from that direction,'" Shoup said in the brief piece. In 2015, The Atlantic magazine doubted the flood of calls to the secret line, while noting that Shoup had a flair for public relations. Phone calls aside, Shoup was indeed media savvy. In 1986, he told the Scripps Howard News Service that he recognized an opportunity when a staff member drew Santa on the glass map in 1955. A lieutenant colonel promised to have it erased. But Shoup said, "You leave it right there," and summoned public affairs. Shoup wanted to boost morale for the troops and public alike. "Why, it made the military look good — like we're not all a bunch of snobs who don't care about Santa Claus," he said. Shoup died in 2009. His children told the StoryCorps podcast in 2014 that it was a misprinted Sears ad that prompted the phone calls. "And later in life he got letters from all over the world," said Terri Van Keuren, a daughter. "People saying 'Thank you, Colonel, for having, you know, this sense of humor.'" A rare addition to Santa's story NORAD's tradition is one of the few modern additions to the centuries-old Santa story that have endured, according to Gerry Bowler, a Canadian historian who spoke to the AP in 2010. Ad campaigns or movies try to "kidnap" Santa for commercial purposes, said Bowler, who wrote "Santa Claus: A Biography." NORAD, by contrast, takes an essential element of Santa's story and views it through a technological lens. In a recent interview with the AP, Air Force Lt. Gen. Case Cunningham explained that NORAD radars in Alaska and Canada —- known as the northern warning system — are the first to detect Santa. He leaves the North Pole and typically heads for the international dateline in the Pacific Ocean. From there he moves west, following the night. "That's when the satellite systems we use to track and identify targets of interest every single day start to kick in," Cunningham said. "A probably little-known fact is that Rudolph's nose that glows red emanates a lot of heat. And so those satellites track (Santa) through that heat source." NORAD has an app and website, www.noradsanta.org , that will track Santa on Christmas Eve from 4 a.m. to midnight, mountain standard time. People can call 1-877-HI-NORAD to ask live operators about Santa's location from 6 a.m. to midnight, mountain time.

By JOSH BOAK WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump loved to use tariffs on foreign goods during his first presidency. But their impact was barely noticeable in the overall economy, even if their aftershocks were clear in specific industries. The data show they never fully delivered on his promised factory jobs. Nor did they provoke the avalanche of inflation that critics feared. This time, though, his tariff threats might be different . The president-elect is talking about going much bigger — on a potential scale that creates more uncertainty about whether he’ll do what he says and what the consequences could be. “There’s going to be a lot more tariffs, I mean, he’s pretty clear,” said Michael Stumo, the CEO of Coalition for a Prosperous America, a group that has supported import taxes to help domestic manufacturing. The president-elect posted on social media Monday that on his first day in office he would impose 25% tariffs on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada until those countries satisfactorily stop illegal immigration and the flow of illegal drugs such as fentanyl into the United States. Those tariffs could essentially blow up the North American trade pact that Trump’s team negotiated during his initial term. Chinese imports would face additional tariffs of 10% until Beijing cracks down on the production of materials used in making fentanyl, Trump posted. Business groups were quick to warn about rapidly escalating inflation , while Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she would counter the move with tariffs on U.S. products. House Democrats put together legislation to strip a president’s ability to unilaterally apply tariffs this drastic, warning that they would likely lead to higher prices for autos, shoes, housing and groceries. Sheinbaum said Wednesday that her administration is already working up a list of possible retaliatory tariffs “if the situation comes to that.” “The economy department is preparing it,” Sheinbaum said. “If there are tariffs, Mexico would increase tariffs, it is a technical task about what would also benefit Mexico,” she said, suggesting her country would impose targeted import duties on U.S. goods in sensitive areas. House Democrats on Tuesday introduced a bill that would require congressional approval for a president to impose tariffs due to claims of a national emergency, a largely symbolic action given Republicans’ coming control of both the House and Senate. “This legislation would enable Congress to limit this sweeping emergency authority and put in place the necessary Congressional oversight before any president – Democrat or Republican – could indiscriminately raise costs on the American people through tariffs,” said Rep. Suzan DelBene, D-Wash. But for Trump, tariffs are now a tested tool that seems less politically controversial even if the mandate he received in November’s election largely involved restraining inflation. The tariffs he imposed on China in his first term were continued by President Joe Biden, a Democrat who even expanded tariffs and restrictions on the world’s second largest economy. Biden administration officials looked at removing Trump’s tariffs in order to bring down inflationary pressures, only to find they were unlikely to help significantly. Tariffs were “so new and unique that it freaked everybody out in 2017,” said Stumo, but they were ultimately somewhat modest. Trump imposed tariffs on solar panels and washing machines at the start of 2018, moves that might have pushed up prices in those sectors even though they also overlapped with plans to open washing machine plants in Tennessee and South Carolina. His administration also levied tariffs on steel and aluminum, including against allies. He then increased tariffs on China, leading to a trade conflict and a limited 2020 agreement that failed to produce the promised Chinese purchases of U.S. goods. Still, the dispute changed relations with China as more U.S. companies looked for alternative suppliers in other countries. Economic research also found the United States may have sacrificed some of its “soft power” as the Chinese population began to watch fewer American movies. The Federal Reserve kept inflation roughly on target, but factory construction spending never jumped in a way that suggested a lasting gain in manufacturing jobs. Separate economic research found the tariff war with China did nothing economically for the communities hurt by offshoring, but it did help Trump and Republicans in those communities politically. When Trump first became president in 2017, the federal government collected $34.6 billion in customs, duties and fees. That sum more than doubled under Trump to $70.8 billion in 2019, according to Office of Management and Budget records. While that sum might seem meaningful, it was relatively small compared to the overall economy. America’s gross domestic product is now $29.3 trillion, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The total tariffs collected in the United States would equal less than 0.3% of GDP. The new tariffs being floated by Trump now are dramatically larger and there could be far more significant impacts. If Mexico, Canada, and China faced the additional tariffs proposed by Trump on all goods imported to the United States, that could be roughly equal to $266 billion in tax collections, a number that does not assume any disruptions in trade or retaliatory moves by other countries. The cost of those taxes would likely be borne by U.S. families, importers and domestic and foreign companies in the form of higher prices or lower profits. Former Biden administration officials said they worried that companies could piggyback on Trump’s tariffs — if they’re imposed — as a rationale to raise their prices, just as many companies after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 boosted food and energy costs and gave several major companies the space to raise prices, according to their own earnings calls with investors. But what Trump didn’t really spell out is what might cause him to back down on tariffs and declare a victory. What he is creating instead with his tariff threats is a sense of uncertainty as companies and countries await the details to figure out what all of this could mean. “We know the key economic policy priorities of the incoming Trump administration, but we don’t know how or when they will be addressed,” said Greg Daco, chief U.S. economist at EY-Parthenon. AP writer Mark Stevenson contributed to this report from Mexico City.PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Suspected gang members opened fire on journalists in Haiti's capital on Tuesday as they covered the attempted reopening of the country's largest hospital, according to a local radio station. Radio Télé Métronome said seven journalists and two police officers were wounded. Police did not immediately respond to calls. have taken over much of Port-au-Prince. They forced the closure of the General Hospital early this year during violence that also targeted the main international airport and Haiti’s two largest prisons. Authorities had pledged to reopen the facility Tuesday. But as journalists gathered to cover the event, suspected gang members opened fire. Video posted online showed reporters inside the building and at least three lying on the floor, apparently wounded. The video could not be immediately verified. Johnson “Izo” André, a local gang leader and part of a gang coalition known as Viv Ansanm that has taken control of much of , posted a video on social media claiming responsibility for the attack. The video said the gang coalition had not authorized the hospital's reopening. Former visited the Hospital of the State University of Haiti, more widely known as the General Hospital, in July after authorities regained control of it from gangs. The hospital had been left ravaged and strewn with debris. Walls and nearby buildings were riddled with bullet holes, signaling fights between police and gangs. The hospital is across the street from the national palace, the scene of several battles in recent months. . Gangs have been looting, burning and destroying medical institutions and pharmacies in the capital. The health system faces additional challenges from the rainy season, which is likely to worsen conditions and increase the risk of water-borne diseases. Poor hygiene conditions in camps and makeshift settlements have heightened the risk of diseases like cholera. ___ Follow AP’s coverage of Latin America and the Caribbean at Evens Sanon, The Associated Press

The commission, an agency under the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, while briefing journalists in Enugu on Sunday, said the arrest of construction workers happened on Friday, and police in Enugu State have refused to release them. An official of the Commission, Mr E. Okeke, who briefed journalists, accused the state government of being behind the arrest, adding that work had stopped at the site. Okeke stated that the police, following the alleged directives of the state governor, Peter Mbah, invaded the site and arrested seven construction workers. The methanol plant, said to be worth more than N40 billion, is the first of its kind in West Africa and was personally brought by President Bola Tinubu for the people of the South East and sited in Nkanuland, which is the homeland of Governor Peter Mbah and Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology. He said that the police stormed the site in the company of the council chairmen of Nkanu East and Nkanu West and arrested the workers. Okeke gave the names of those arrested as Ambrose Edeh, Chibuike Edeh, Monday Nwodo, Obinna Samuel, Ebuka Chukwurah, Chibuike Okereke, and Maduabuchi Okoro. He said, “The police officers also removed batteries of the earth-moving machines at the site, in order to stall the construction activities. “The construction workers arrested were detained briefly at RRS Govt House Enugu and later moved to Anti Kidnapping section at Independence Layout, Enugu and around midnight moved to State CID.” However, when higher federal government authorities were contacted, they made unsuccessful attempts to reach the officials of the Nigerian police at Enugu. But when they contacted the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, he quickly swung into action and ordered the immediate release of the detainees. Related News Enugu gov commits over N2bn to ESUTH upgrade, student hostels Enugu women hold road walk against GBV Enugu, Austrian firm sign $100m water infrastructure deal Sources around the local government told journalists that Nkanu leaders were angry with the action of the state government for trying to frustrate federal government investment in their land. The land where the project was located was properly donated to the federal government by the community for the project, according to leaders of the community, who displayed a document to that effect. The N40 billion Naira bio methanol project, when operational, is expected to solve most of the industrial needs of Nigeria and Africa. It is also one of the biggest projects in the entire South-East by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. One of the elders of the host community, Chief John Ogbodo, who spoke to journalists at the site, said that it was obvious action of the state government was politically motivated since the project was attracted by Chief Uche Nnaji, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State during the 2023 general elections. The methanol project, in addition to a similar project, the N60 billion Solar PV project (for production of solar panels) also attracted to the area by the minister, has the combined capacity to provide employment to tens of thousands of Enugu state youths and change the economy of Enugu and the South East in general. Some community elders alleged that it was obvious the state government was glittery and hence wanted to frustrate the projects because of the likely impact come 2027. Efforts by our correspondent to speak with the Enugu State Police Command on the incident were unsuccessful as the command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, did not take his calls or respond to a text seeking his comment. Also, the executive chairman of Nkanu West LGA, John Ogbodo, who reportedly led the police to arrest the construction workers did not take his calls when contacted and had yet to respond to text messages seeking his comment. Efforts to get a reaction from the senior special assistant to the governor on media, Mr Dan Nwaome, were unsuccessful as he did not take his calls. At the time of filing this report, he was yet to respond to a text message seeking his comment.Chivy Partners with CLEAR to Revolutionize Dating App Security, Setting New Standards for Safe, Authentic Connections

UNICEF will also receive support to provide essential water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities, particularly in flood-hit areas like the Bicol region, where safe drinking water and improved waste management are critical to reducing health risks. The assistance is set to begin reaching affected communities over the weekend of 23 November, augmenting ongoing government relief efforts. In addition to the £1 million bilateral aid, the UK has mobilized centrally managed funds to address the crisis. These include £595,000 from the “Start Ready” fund for emergency response in Cagayan, CHF 900,000 from the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies’ Disaster Response Emergency Fund for Philippine Red Cross operations, and $3.5 million from the UN Central Emergency Response Fund to bolster UN-led relief efforts. Bowes emphasized that the British Embassy is committed to serving not just Manila but the entire Philippines. “The Embassy’s work extends beyond Manila to the provinces,” he said, noting that his visits to regions like Ilocos Norte aim to bring the British Government closer to the people. He stressed the importance of engaging with Local Government Units to strengthen ties and foster collaboration, paving the way for more effective assistance and partnership in addressing local challenges. Bowes’ visit to Ilocos Norte signifies the UK’s broader commitment to strengthening ties with the Philippines and supporting disaster recovery efforts. The envoy’s presence also reflects the continuing collaboration between the two nations in addressing humanitarian challenges and building resilience against future disasters. Ambassador Beaufils expressed hope that the UK’s contributions would help the most vulnerable recover from the devastation and rebuild their lives. “We are hopeful that our assistance to the humanitarian efforts will help the most vulnerable to recover from the impact of the successive typhoons,” she said.

Corey puts up 27 and South Alabama knocks off East Texas A&M 81-72The Los Angeles Lakers continue to clumsily move through the regular season. The current roster is a mishmash of talent, with very little crossover into how head coach JJ Redick would like his team to play. Furthermore, LeBron James has begun to show signs of his age despite still putting up incredible averages. One serious area of concern for the Lakers has been their inconsistent offense. On some nights, they look like a team capable of contending for a championship, while on others, they appear to be on a fast track to a full-scale rebuild. Speaking to ESPN's Dave McMenamin , Redick detailed the fine margins the Lakers are facing and how slight tweaks could turn their season around. “I would probably point immediately to our shot profile,” Redick said. “Over the last 13 [games], we're taking five more non-paint twos — we're shooting 39% on those. And for all the people that hate math, I shared this with the team this morning and I think it's really interesting. We're last, or second to last, in the last 13 in our offense. Those five extra non-paint twos, if we shot them at the same rate as Phoenix — who shoots 49% on non-paint twos — our offense would go from 29th to 12th.” The problem is that it's easy to point to the slender margins on a stat sheet but far harder to make the necessary adjustments on the court. We've all seen the Lakers make bad decisions on offense this season, from poor shot selection to trying to play hero ball. Yes, making some of those shots would change how we speak about the Lakers' current struggles, but it would just be papering over the cracks. Redick needs a younger team that he can mold. He has a modern outlook on how the game should be played, but outside of James and Anthony Davis, he lacks the talent to translate his ideas onto the floor. He would be better served with young high-upside players who can develop within his system. Dalton Knecht and Austin Reaves already fit that bill. Redick was always seen as a long-term hire. The Lakers want to build a system and style of play and begin developing their own talent. If that's the future Jeanie Buss envisions , it makes no sense to hang Redick out to dry with a team that doesn't fit together. Yes, the Lakers are within striking distance of figuring things out. However, any uptick in performance is unlikely to be sustainable long-term. Sooner or later, the front office must give Redick the chance to build his own team. Only then can we see what his system is truly capable of.

SEOUL, South Korea , Nov. 27, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation have unveiled a reliable companion for industrial work, the wearable robot 'X-ble Shoulder.' This device, just by being worn, can increase workers' efficiency and reduce musculoskeletal injuries. Two videos released on Hyundai Motor Group's YouTube channel show the X-ble Shoulder in action, including product features and the development story . Hyundai Motor and Kia unveiled the X-ble Shoulder at Wearable Robot Tech Day held at the Hyundai Motorstudio Goyang near Seoul . The X-ble Shoulder, the first product in the X-ble line, is an industrial wearable robot developed by Hyundai Motor and Kia's Robotics LAB. Following its domestic launch, the companies plan to gradually expand sales to overseas markets. In addition to the X-ble Shoulder, Hyundai Motor and Kia plan to develop an industrial wearable robot 'X-ble Waist' to assist the waist when lifting heavy loads, and a medical wearable robot 'X-ble MEX' for the rehabilitation of the walking impaired. "The X-ble Shoulder is a wearable robot that leverages the technical capabilities of the Robotics LAB and implements feedback from actual users," said Dong Jin Hyun , Vice President and Head of Robotics LAB at Hyundai Motor and Kia. "Going forward, we aim to expand the availability of wearable robots, creating products that work naturally with users to enhance their daily lives. Gaetz withdraws as Trump's pick for attorney general, averting confirmation battle in the Senate WASHINGTON (AP) — Matt Gaetz has withdrawn as Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general following scrutiny over a federal sex trafficking investigation. The Florida Republican made the announcement Thursday. Gaetz’s withdrawal is a blow to Trump’s push to install steadfast loyalists in his incoming administration and the first sign that Trump could face resistance from members of his own party. Trump said in a social media post that Gaetz “did not want to be a distraction for the Administration.” Gaetz said “it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work" of the transition team. He added, “There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle.” Top war-crimes court issues arrest warrants for Netanyahu, ex-defense minister and a Hamas leader THE HAGUE (AP) — The world’s top war-crimes court has issued arrest warrants for the leaders of Israel and Hamas, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The warrants issued Thursday accuse them of crimes against humanity in connection with their war that began more than a year ago. The warrants against Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant focus on allegations Israel has used food as a weapon in its campaign against Hamas in Gaza, a charge Israeli officials deny. The action by the International Criminal Court came as the death toll from Israel’s campaign in Gaza passed 44,000 people. Local health authorities say more than half of those killed were women and children. Several of Trump's Cabinet picks — and Trump himself — have been accused of sexual misconduct WASHINGTON (AP) — Former congressman Matt Gaetz has withdrawn his name as President-elect Donald Trump's choice for attorney general in the face of sexual misconduct allegations. He's not the only member of Trump’s chosen staff and Cabinet accused of some form of misconduct. Others include: Elon Musk, his choice to help lead a new outside panel seeking to boost government efficiency, Health and Human Services nominee Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Trump’s choice for defense secretary Pete Hegseth and Linda McMahon, his choice to lead the Department of Education. They all deny the claims. Death toll in Gaza from Israel-Hamas war passes 44,000, Palestinian officials say DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Palestinian health officials say the death toll in the Gaza Strip from the 13-month-old war between Israel and Hamas has surpassed 44,000. The Gaza Health Ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its count, but it has said that more than half of the fatalities are women and children. The Israeli military says it has killed over 17,000 militants, without providing evidence. The war began when Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting another 250. Around 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, at least a third of whom are believed to be dead. Most of the rest were released during a cease-fire last year. Elon Musk's budget crusade could cause a constitutional clash in Trump's second term WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump has put Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy in charge of finding ways to cut government spending and regulations. It's possible that their efforts will lead to a constitutional clash. This week, Musk and Ramaswamy said they would encourage the Republican president-elect to refuse to spend money allocated by Congress, which would conflict with a 1974 law that's intended to prevent presidents from blocking funds. If Trump takes such a step, it would quickly become one of the most closely watched legal battles of his second administration. Musk and Ramaswamy also aim to dramatically reduce the size of the federal workforce. Putin says Russia has tested a new intermediate range missile in a strike on Ukraine Russian President Vladimir Putin says Moscow has tested a new intermediate-range missile in a strike on Ukraine and that it could use the weapon against countries that have allowed Kyiv to use their missiles to strike Russia. Putin said during a nationwide TV address that the Russian strike Thursday on the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro came in response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory this week that used U.S. and British longer-range missiles. Two people were wounded in the attack. Putin declared that Russia would issue advance warnings if it launches more strikes with such missile against Ukraine to allow civilians to evacuate to safety. He warned that U.S. air defense systems wouldn’t be capable of intercepting Russian missiles. Jussie Smollett’s conviction in 2019 attack on himself is overturned SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Illinois Supreme Court has overturned actor Jussie Smollett’s conviction on charges that he staged a racist and homophobic attack against himself in 2019 and lied to Chicago police. The state’s highest court ruled Thursday on Smollett’s argument that a special prosecutor should not have been allowed to intervene after the local state’s attorney initially dropped charges. The 5-0 decision did not address Smollett's claims of innocence. The Black, gay actor claimed two men assaulted him, spouted slurs and tossed a noose around his neck. Smollett was on the television drama “Empire,” which filmed in Chicago. Testimony at his trial indicated Smollett paid $3,500 to two men to carry out the attack. SEC Chair Gary Gensler, who led US crackdown on cryptocurrencies, to step down Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler will step down from his post on January 20. Since taking the lead at the SEC, the commission has been aggressive in its oversight of cryptocurrencies and other regulatory issues. President-elect Donald Trump had promised during his campaign that he would remove Gensler, who has led the U.S. government’s crackdown on the crypto industry and repeatedly called for more oversight. But Gensler on Thursday announced that he would be stepping down from his post on the day that Trump is inaugurated. Bitcoin has jumped 40% since Trump’s victory. US towns plunge into debates about fluoride in water NEW YORK (AP) — Fights are cropping up nationwide over fluoride in drinking water. Communities in Florida, Texas, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming and elsewhere have debated the idea in recent months. And several have decided to stop adding it to drinking water. In August, a federal agency for the first time reported that there is a link between high levels of fluoride exposure and lower IQ in kids. And in September, a federal judge ordered the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to further regulate it in drinking water. The decision to add fluoride to drinking water rests with state and local officials, but advisers to Donald Trump have suggested he would push to remove it. Was it all a joke? How stand-up comedy helped reelect Trump Did stand-up comedians help reelect Donald Trump? Not a joke, as outgoing President Joe Biden might say. Trump has been the butt of countless late-night monologues and “Saturday Night Live” sketches for the better part of a decade, but the once and future president's path to reelection relied a lot on stand-up comedy. Trump sat for long, friendly interviews on comedians' podcasts in an effort to reach young men. But he also employed his own stand-up-like campaigning style replete with meandering stories and digressions, a rhetorical tactic that connected with audiences and also made it hard to tell what exactly was policy and what was a joke.Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney says Canada didn't live up to its values on immigration over the last few years as it allowed more people into the country than it could absorb. Carney, who is currently a special adviser to the Liberal party, made those comments during an event in Ottawa held by Cardus, a Christian think tank. Carney says Canada let newcomers down by admitting more workers and students than it could provide for, including with housing, health care and social services. Earlier this fall, the Liberal government announced a plan to significantly reduced its immigration target for permanent residents and to dramatically scale back the number of temporary residents in Canada. Those changes came about after a period of strong population growth that led to mounting criticism of the Liberal government's immigration policies. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has acknowledged that the federal government did not get the balance right on immigration after the COVID-19 pandemic. TNF betting analysis & expert picks for Steelers vs. Browns Here are picks on a side and the total from our NFL betting analysts. "On the heels of a physical win over Baltimore, there's concern a Steelers' letdown is coming," Tony Mejia writes."Pittsburgh is on the road in its first short week situation of 2024, lost at Cleveland last year and went 1-1 on short rest in '23, barely defeating the Titans and losing to the Patriots, who went a combined 10-24. "The Steelers fell at the Browns in a Week 3 TNF game in '22, too, so Mike Tomlin has a pretty recent history on his side to help offset complacency as he warns his team against letting it be repeated. That should aid the cause, so lay the short number with the Steelers." Pick: Steelers -3.5 Bet here: Sign up for your new FanDuel account TSN's Sloan Piva is fading conventional thinking when it comes to the total for Steelers vs. Browns. Here's Sloan: "We sniffed out the value of this Thursday Night Football matchup nice and early. At last glance, 62 percent of the early over/under bets for this one have been on the under, so we're going against the grain and betting the over." Piva thinks both teams will contribute offensively with relatively new QBs under center. "In the three games Jameis Winston has started since taking over for injured (and awful) QB Deshaun Watson, Jame-O has thrown six touchdowns," he observes. "The Browns have averaged 17.6 points per game with Winston, and they even got a huge upset win over the Ravens four weeks ago." What about Pittsburgh? "The Steelers have also been a much more dynamic offense since changing quarterbacks," Piva writes. "In four games with Russell Wilson under center, Pittsburgh has averaged 27.3 PPG and, like Cleveland, thrown for six TDs. Don't let the narrative of the short week and the tough defenses get into your head — this one should feature some decent scoring." Alabama A&M announced Burnett's death on Wednesday. "Today, our Bulldog family is heartbroken by the loss of Medrick Burnett Jr.," Alabama A&M athletic director Dr. Paul A. Bryant said in a statement. "Medrick was more than an exceptional athlete; he was a remarkable young man whose positive energy, leadership, and compassion left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. While words cannot adequately express our grief, we are humbled by the strength of his family, who stood by his side throughout this unimaginable ordeal. "We extend our deepest condolences and prayers to Medrick's parents, siblings, and loved ones. We also offer our heartfelt support to his teammates, coaches, and the entire Alabama A&M community who are mourning this loss. In this moment of sorrow, we come together to honor Medrick's legacy and celebrate the light he brought to our lives." According to a GoFundMe page from his sister, Dominece James, Burnett was injured in a head-to-head collision in the 27-19 loss against Alabama State in the Magic City Classic at Birmingham. She displayed a hospital picture showing her brother heavily inundated with tubes and other equipment. James said her brother had severe brain swelling and bleeding. WAFF-TV in Huntsville, Ala., displayed a video of the play in which he was hurt, though it is unclear exactly how he was injured so severely. The footage also showed Burnett being taken off the field on a stretcher. Burnett gave a thumbs-up to the crowd while being wheeled off. According to the station, Burnett's condition worsened in the days following the game. Burnett, a redshirt freshman from Lakewood, Calif., had five tackles in seven games this season. He was a transfer from Grambling State. A handful of Kamala Harris campaign consultants made several shocking confessions while reflecting on the election cycle . David Plouffe, Stephanie Cutter, Quentin Fulks and Jen O'Malley Dillon sat down with hosts of the "Pod Save America" podcast this week to discuss her doomed campaign. The team shared their shock about post-debate public polling that contradicted their internal polling, explained why Harris struggled and afraid to differentiate herself from Joe Biden and addressed the no-show Joe Rogan podcast controversy, among other things. Worst storm for half a century blankets major city in 8 inches of snow Dr. Oz seeks to privatize Medicare as uninsured 'do not have right to health' The advisers admitted that they were "surprised" to see public polling showing Harris ahead of Donald Trump after the debate in September and October because their internal polling had her way behind. “We were behind. I mean, I think it surprised people because there were these public polls that came out in late September, early October, showing us with leads that we never saw,” said Plouffe, Harris’ senior campaign adviser. Among the messaging failures, the team admits, including the struggle to separate and distance Harris from President Biden, whether on the economy, the border and immigration or Gaza. “She felt like she was part of the administration," Cutter explained. "So why should she look back and pick out, cherry-pick, some things that she would have done differently when she was part of it? She added that Harris "also had tremendous loyalty to President Biden." This issue came to a head when Harris said on ABC's "The View" that "nothing comes to mind" when asked how her administration would differ from her predecessor’s. Cutter added, “Imagine if we said, ‘Well, we would have taken this approach on the border.’ Imagine the round of stories coming out after that of people saying, ‘Well, she never said that in a meeting,’ or ‘What meeting when she said this,’ or ‘I remember when she did that.’ And it was just, it wasn’t going to give us what we needed because it wouldn’t be a clean break.” DON'T MISS... The team also reflected on and applauded the Republican campaign for taking advantage of right-wing media, whether reaching voters on TikTok or through podcasts like The Joe Rogan Experience. “The Republicans have a well-tuned, well-oiled, well-invested echo chamber that exists beyond where they’re campaigning. And it’s online. It reverberates through TikTok. It reverberates through the culture,” Fulks said. “There is a cultural dynamic that’s at play in politics today where it is converging like we’ve never seen.” Plouffe also addressed the Joe Rogan controversy and explained that there was a scheduling issue, as Rogan previously admitted on social media, as he refused to interview unless it was in his podcast studio in Austin. In total, the Harris campaign spent an eyewatering $1.5 billion over 15 weeks compared to under $1.1 billion for Trump.AP Trending SummaryBrief at 5:52 p.m. EST

The Detroit Lions are set to take on the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving in Week 13 and the team hopes to have the services of running back David Montgomery for the divisional contest. Montgomery suffered a shoulder injury in the second half of the Week 12 contest against the Indianapolis Colts , which forced his early exit from the game. According to the Lions' injury report , Montgomery did not practice on Monday, was limited on Tuesday and then turned in a full practice on Wednesday. Despite closing out the week with a full session, Montgomery has drawn a questionable tag, which means he isn't fully guaranteed to play. However, there are reasons for optimism that he will suit up against the Bears. Here's the latest update on Montgomery's status for Week 13. David Montgomery injury update Per the team's final injury report, Montgomery was upgraded to full participation on Wednesday but is questionable. The fact that he was able to turn in a full practice means he has a better chance to play than not. #CHIvsDET injury report presented by Henry Ford Health. pic.twitter.com/1UdPbZz9hh Is David Montgomery playing in Week 13? All signs point to Montgomery playing on Thursday. Not only was he able to log a full practice on Wednesday, head coach Dan Campbell expressed optimism earlier in the week that Montgomery will play. "Dan Campbell says he feels good about David Montgomery playing Thursday," Dannie Rogers of the team's official website reported on Tuesday. Adding to that, Montgomery revealed after the win over the Colts that he was held out of the rest of that contest as a precaution and he expects to suit up for the Bears game. Asked David Montgomery if he could've gone back in the game if needed. He said yes, but Dan Campbell pulled him aside and told him, "There's bigger fish to fry." Said it was a smart decision and he'll be ready to go Thursday. At this point, it would be surprising to see Montgomery inactive. We fully expect him to play and have a normal workload against his former team. Even still, keep an eye out for the inactives list an hour and a half before kickoff on Thursday just to make sure.
