OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Fresh off one of its best showings of the season, the Baltimore defense now has another problem to worry about. Roquan Smith missed practice again Friday because of a hamstring injury. Although the Ravens didn't officially rule him or anyone else out — they don't play until Monday night — the All-Pro linebacker's status seems dicey. “Definitely it will be a challenge if Roquan can’t go,” defensive coordinator Zach Orr said. “We’re holding out hope and everything like that. I think it’ll just be by committee. Not one person is going to replace Roquan. Roquan’s an every-down linebacker.” Although the Ravens lost 18-16 last weekend, Baltimore didn't allow a touchdown. That was an encouraging sign for a team that ranks 26th in the league in total defense. Baltimore is on the road Monday against the Los Angeles Chargers. The Ravens appear to have dodged one potential nightmare. Star safety Kyle Hamilton injured an ankle against Cincinnati on Nov. 7, but he was able to play almost every defensive snap the following week against Pittsburgh. But Smith was injured in that game and didn't practice Thursday or Friday. Linebacker Malik Harrison had a season high in tackles last weekend and figures to have a significant role if Smith can't go. “We tell these guys, ‘You’re one play away to going in there — you never know, so you got to stay ready.’ Malik — he was ready,” Orr said. “I thought he went in there and did a good job, especially after the first series, he settled down. That’s what we expect from him.” It's hard to tell whether last week can be a significant turning point for Baltimore's defense. The Ravens allowed only 10 points in a dominant win over Buffalo in Week 4, then yielded 38 against Cincinnati the following game. After allowing 10 against Denver, the Ravens were picked apart by the Bengals again a few days later. So they still haven't shown they can play a good game defensively and then build on it. “I think it’s easier said than done. It’s something that we kind of got caught up saying against Buffalo and then coming up the next week and not doing," Hamilton said. "We’re aware of it now and know that we played a good game, but I think we can get a lot better, and I think that’s kind of the mindset everybody on defense has right now.” Hamilton's ability to make a difference all over the field is part of what makes him valuable, but positioning him deep is one way the Ravens can try to guard against big passing plays. Pittsburgh's Russell Wilson threw for only 205 yards against Baltimore. That's after Joe Burrow passed for 428 and four touchdowns in the Ravens' previous game. “I’ve always seen myself as a safety. PAGBABAGO Ten years ago, an ASEAN regional workshop on journalism curriculum was held in the country. Organized by the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC) and the UNESCO National Commission, the workshop was held in partnership with the Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE), the Embassy of Canada, Commission on Higher Education Technical Committee, UP College of Mass Communication, St. Theresa’s College of Cebu, and Philippine Star. Earlier initiatives included an Experts’ Consultative Meeting on Journalism Education held in Paris in 2008 and two experts’ consultative meetings involving all regions of the world. The draft curricula was formally presented at the 2007 joint meetings in Singapore by the World Journalism Education Congress andAsian Media and Information Center (AMIC). Already, there was recognition of the tremendous impact of the new information technology. Change was shown in the practice of journalism, specifically in information generation, processing and delivery and exchange. No longer do we talk about print, radio or TV journalism but content, format, and processes. Convergence made it imperative for traditionally trained journalists to collaborate with emergent journalists in cyberspace – bloggers, vloggers, and members of networks. Journalism education must demonstrate a multidisciplinary and inter-sectoral approach in training and content development. The new model curricula recognizes that journalists and information professionals must be trained to become listeners, mediators, catalysts. They must be able to “triangulate” the views from above, below, and from a variety of sectors. It was also recognized that journalism curricula must operate in a “democratic” environment and within a culture of tolerance and peace. I then equated the process of information handling and transformation to that of a painter handling a brush. The new journalist and painter starts by allowing his values, intuition, passion guide the flow of words or stroke of the brush. The new curricula is built on these three lines – an axis representing the norms, values, tools, standards; the social, cultural, political economic, legal and ethical aspects within the national borders; and an axis focused on knowledge of the world and the new intellectual challenges. What then is new? At the second session series of community journalism knowledge sharing held last week, Fr. Benigno Beltran, founder of the Sandiwaan Center of Learning presented how his learning approach based on the convergence model of solidarity (collaboration), integrity (truth, transparency, empathy), and creativity (learning to work with the new media of AI and new information technology), can be tailored for the training of “digital natives.” Can we build a new approach that is responsive, rights-based, and community-centered in journalism education? The new model, which is based on democratic values and sustainable development, must inspire and ignite the values and mindsets needed to “light the fire,” awaken the learner’s passion and ensure that he/she can become a catalyst of freedom of expression and change in the communities. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said this weekend that the Department of Homeland Security should send special drone-detection technology made by Robin Radar Systems to New York and New Jersey following a series of mysterious sightings. > Philadelphia news 24/7: Watch NBC10 free wherever you are If the technology exists for a drone to make it up into the sky, there certainly is the technology that can track the craft with precision and determine what the heck is going on,” Schumer told reporters on Sunday. Schumer said he is requesting Robin’s equipment in part because it uses “not a linear line of sight, but 360-degree technology that has a much better chance of detecting these drones.” In recent years, the Netherlands-based Robin Radar Systems has risen in prominence, though its hardware is not only used to track down drones. Robin is part of a consortium developing small radar satellites that can measure water levels, according to the Netherlands Space Office. In February, the company also deployed four bird-detection radars to support the creation of what has been billed as the world’s most ecological wind farm in the Dutch part of the North Sea. In early October 2023, Robin announced it had joined a group of organizations working on the development of the world’s most advanced weather radar , known as PHARA. The group’s mission is to “develop a fully 3D weather radar that can accurately track the movement and growth process of cloud particles and large-scale weather fronts.” “Detecting small objects is what we do, and it’s what we do best,” the company says on its website. “Bird, bat, or drone, our 360° radar systems log thousands of observations, scanning every second to track and classify with precision.” Robin’s systems have been used in at least one notable military context, too. In early August, the Dutch Ministry of Defense announced it had purchased 51 drone radars from the company and planned to donate them to Ukraine as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s forces attempt to fend off Russia’s aerial assault. In a news release announcing the purchase, Robin explained that “traditional radar systems are typically stationary, mounted on fixed platforms like buildings or tripods.” But the Robin-produced radar systems have “on-the-move” functionality, allowing them to “perform even when mounted on mobile objects, like vehicles or ships.” “Robin’s 3D drone detection radars ... are designed with the explicit purpose of detecting small, fast and elusive drones,” the company said. The deployment of Robin technology could come as a relief to residents in the New York and New Jersey areas who have been rattled by the bright, unidentified flying objects hovering above their homes almost every night for weeks. The objects have appeared in the sky since at least Nov. 18. It remains unclear who is operating the devices. The Pentagon has insisted the objects are not owned by the military. In an interview with NBC News on Monday, Robin Radar Systems general manager Kristian Brost said the company’s radars can detect a drone in the sky, but “we can’t tell you who’s flying it [or] what country it’s from.” Schumer’s request to Homeland Security came two days after New York Stewart International Airport was closed following multiple drone sightings nearby. The Democratic lawmaker told reporters it was “remarkable” that “we have more questions than answers” amid a growing number of mysterious sightings. “Some of the drones are small. Some of the drones’ flight patterns are erratic,” Schumer said. “Multiple drones flying together can confuse a traditional radar system, and that’s why, again, this new technology can really get us the answers that we need.” Schumer said he was working to pass a bill that would give local law enforcement “more tools for drone detection.” Currently, only federal agencies have the legal authority to scour for drones. The Democratic lawmaker’s office did not immediately respond to an email Monday requesting more information. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, meanwhile, said on X late Sunday that he had met with state police officials and radar technicians who are “surveying the area for unmanned aircraft systems.” “The public deserves clear answers — we will keep pushing the federal government for more information and resources,” Murphy said.
