DEEP in the ancient burial grounds of China’s first emperor, archaeologists made a discovery that could rewrite the story of one of the world’s most enigmatic military forces. Hidden among the famed Terracotta Army , this rare find is unlike anything seen in decades, shedding new light on the organisation and leadership of an army frozen in time for over two millennia. The breakthrough came in Pit Two of the sprawling mausoleum in Shaanxi province, where researchers unearthed a life-sized statue believed to depict a high-ranking general. Distinguished by its ornate armour, elaborate headdress, and distinctive posture, the figure is only the 10th officer found since the Terracotta Army was first discovered in 1974. “Based on its location, we believe this figure was likely the highest-ranking military commander of this unit," said Zhu Sihong, head of the excavation project. Accompanying the general were two chariots, three clay horses, and two additional figurines. Originally stumbled upon by local farmers digging a well, the site has since revealed over 2,000 life-size statues, with experts estimating as many as 8,000 remain buried. "The style and colour of the adornments featured the aesthetic taste and social status symbols [of the time.]" The excavation of Pit Two began in earnest in 1994, with formal digs resuming in 2015. This latest discovery comes as the Terracotta Warriors mark 50 years since their initial unearthing, underscoring the site’s enduring capacity to yield new treasures. Restoration of the newly discovered figurine is already underway. Experts are carefully cleaning and reassembling the general, a process that will precede detailed analysis and eventual public display. Despite the progress, many mysteries linger. They are arranged in military formations across three large pits and represent the emperor's army. Archaeologists have excavated over 2,000 figures, but it is estimated there could be as many as 8,000 still buried. The army includes infantry soldiers, archers, cavalry, charioteers, and generals, as well as horses and chariots. Each warrior is unique, with individualised facial features, hairstyles, and expressions. They were originally painted in vibrant colours, though much of the paint has faded over time. Many of these weapons were advanced for their time, showcasing the sophistication of Qin dynasty military technology. The statues were crafted using a combination of molds and hand sculpting. They were made in pieces and then assembled, standing approximately 6 feet tall and weighing hundreds of pounds each. The Terracotta Army was intended to be a guardian force to protect Emperor Qin Shi Huang in the afterlife and ensure his continued dominance even after death. The site houses a narrow gauge railway , previously used by the council for engineering works, which you can ride on special event days. Newarke Houses Museum Leicester’s Newarke Houses comprises two of the city’s most interesting properties - Wygston's Chantry House and Skeffington House. Now a museum , the houses boast a collection of social history and regimental memorabilia, which showcase Leicester through the ages and tell the story of people who call the city their home. The real hidden gem is the gardens, with a section of old town wall complete with original musket holes from the English Civil War. Belgrave Hall Steeped in history and surrounded by natural beauty, Belgrave Hall provides an oasis of peace and quiet in a busy city. Built in the early 18th century, the Hall has been home to several noteworthy residents over the years, including William Vann, High Sheriff of Leicestershire and John Ellis, businessman and Leicester MP, who was instrumental in introducing the railway to Leicester. King Richard III Visitor Centre The King Richard III Visitor Centre opened in July 2014 and tells the story of Richard III’s life, death and the remarkable search, discovery and identification of the remains found under a car park in Leicester in August 2012. Built within a Victorian Grammar School adjacent to Richard III’s grave site , which is now incorporated into the visitor centre under a glass viewing floor, the visitor centre is managed by Leicester Museums and Galleries, part of Leicester City Council’s Arts and Museums Service. Leicester City Hall City Hall, Leicester City Council’s headquarters underwent major refurbishment to create office accommodation and meeting rooms. The building refurbishment included the replication of period features to create a 21st century refit with a 1930s feel. Hansom Hall The Story of Leicester website notes: "Belvoir Street Chapel was designed by Joseph Hansom, inventor of the horse–drawn cab. Built in 1845 to accommodate a growing Baptist congregation, it was designed for up to 1,500 people and included lecture and schoolrooms. Its circular interior was lit by gas, presenting a “brilliant appearance”. " By the 1940s the congregation had united with the Baptists of Charles Street Chapel and in 1947 the building was sold. The Ministry, in a release, highlighted that this represents nearly half of the 1,57,066 startups supported by the government, underscoring the crucial role women play in driving innovation and economic growth. India has emerged as one of the most vibrant startup ecosystems globally, securing its position as the third-largest startup hub. With over 100 unicorns, the Indian startup landscape is shaping the future of innovation and entrepreneurship. The entrepreneurial spirit in India has undergone a paradigm shift over the last decade. Cities such as Bengaluru , Hyderabad , Mumbai , and Delhi-NCR have become epicentres of innovation. The widespread availability of affordable internet, coupled with a young and dynamic workforce, has fuelled the growth of startups in diverse sectors, including fintech, edtech, health-tech, and e-commerce. According to the “Indian Startup Ecosystem Report” by Startup India, India’s startups have leveraged emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and IoT to address both local and global challenges. This culture of innovation, supported by incubators, accelerators, and robust mentoring networks, has fostered a unique ecosystem that connects grassroots challenges with cutting-edge solutions. Recognising the transformative potential of startups, the Indian government has introduced several initiatives to support and nurture entrepreneurship. The flagship Startup India programme, launched in 2016, has been a cornerstone of this effort. As of December 25, 2024, 157,066 startups have been recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), with 759,303 users registered on the portal.
