Download this week's devotionalScripture describes Jesus Christ as a shepherd in various ways. In John 10:11, He is described as the “good shepherd” who “lays down his life for his sheep.” In Hebrews 13:20, He is described as the “great shepherd” who grants peace through “the blood of the eternal covenant.” In 1 Peter 5:4, He is described as the “Chief Shepherd” who will return and bring with Him “the unfading crown of glory” for those who believe in Him. However, Psalm 22 is the account of Jesus as the dying shepherd, who embraced the cross for the sake of those same believers, which has given this psalm the designation as the “Psalm of the Cross” over the years. It provides the clearest & most compelling description in all of Scripture of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and it is the description of an execution, specifically, a crucifixion, which was a means of death not practiced in the time of David (nor for many centuries afterward). Thus, this is not an account of suffering endured by some unnamed ancient person, but a prophetic picture of the suffering to be endured by Jesus when He paid the penalty for our sins.
